116 E Main Apartments, Retail + Office Suites
Adaptive intervention.
Upland Architects is proud to play a key role in the revitalization of Uptown Cherryville through the transformation of 116 East Main Street—an architecturally significant property listed on the National Register of Historic Places—into a vibrant mixed-use destination.
This adaptive reuse project blends the charm of Cherryville’s historic fabric with the functionality and efficiency of modern design, aligning with the City’s broader vision for a dynamic, entrepreneurial downtown. In close collaboration with a visionary ownership team—and supported by CMSP grants and historic district tax incentives—Upland reimagined the two-story structure to support both commercial and residential uses.
Today, the building houses four thoughtfully designed luxury apartments on the upper level, situated above three professional office suites and a separate retail storefront at street level. The office spaces feature private bathrooms, soaring original tin ceilings, and shared access to a kitchen and conference room—offering an ideal environment for local businesses to thrive. The retail suite, with its own dedicated entrance, further enhances the building’s street presence and commercial flexibility.
The residences are appointed with open-concept layouts, hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, original wood rafters, and high-end finishes including stainless steel appliances and in-unit laundry. Energy-efficient HVAC systems, insulated windows, privately coded entrances, and off-street parking, provide tenants with both comfort and convenience.
This project serves as a model for community-centered, sustainable development—seamlessly merging heritage preservation with forward-thinking design to help reinvigorate one of North Carolina’s historic downtowns.
