200 E Main Apartments,
Bakery+ Art Studio

Adaptive intervention.

Upland Architects is proud to support the revitalization of Uptown Cherryville through the transformation of 200 East Main Street—a property on the National Register of Historic Places—into a vibrant, mixed-use destination. This adaptive reuse project blends the charm of the past with the functionality of modern design, contributing to Cherryville’s growing vision for a dynamic, entrepreneurial downtown.

Working closely with visionary ownership and leveraging CMSP grants and historic district tax incentives, Upland reimagined this two-story building into a thoughtfully curated space that now houses two luxury residential apartments above two street-level commercial units: Butter Me Up, a locally loved bakery, and a creative art studio.

The upper-level residences feature open-concept layouts with hardwood floors, exposed brick walls, original wood rafters, and high-end finishes including stainless steel appliances and in-unit laundry. Energy-efficient HVAC systems, insulated windows, and private coded entrances with off-street parking and a covered patio provide residents with both comfort and convenience.

This project stands as a model for sustainable and community-centered revitalization, blending heritage preservation with forward-thinking development to reinvigorate one of North Carolina’s historic downtowns.
