Upland Architects is proud to serve as an ongoing architectural partner to Cantina Hospitality, LLC, a franchisee of Taco Bell with a footprint of over 80 restaurants across the Northeast and Midwest. Known for its vibrant culture, emphasis on employee development, and commitment to community engagement, Cantina Hospitality has trusted Upland to support the expansion and evolution of their brand across a variety of urban and suburban settings.

 

Our collaboration includes both ground-up prototypes and urban fit-outs, with each project tailored to the unique needs of the site and community. All ground-up developments are constructed to align with Taco Bell’s latest national prototype specifications and are classified as traditional locations. For urban fit-outs, especially in the Boston area, Upland Architects takes special care to preserve the architectural character of the city while delivering spaces that meet Taco Bell’s operational requirements and brand identity.

 

Taco Bell's urban Cantina locations, such as the standout project at Coolidge Corner, offer a more elevated dining experience with beer, wine, and spirits, while still maintaining the quick-service efficiency customers expect. These Cantina models are often located in dense, walkable neighborhoods, and require a nuanced design approach to integrate seamlessly with the surrounding urban fabric.

Each project begins with test fits and feasibility studies, followed by a full suite of architectural services including Site Investigation Reports, NTP documentation, Construction Documents, and Construction Administration. Upland also coordinates with all essential consultants—including MEP, Structural, Civil, and Life Safety—and interfaces directly with Taco Bell Corporate and Hillson Contractors, Inc., Cantina Hospitality’s dedicated General Contractor.

 

In every location—whether in South Boston, Allston, or along Boylston Street—Upland aims to create location-specific Taco Bell experiences, incorporating custom graphics and architectural features that reflect the unique spirit of the surrounding neighborhood.

This ongoing partnership demonstrates Upland’s ability to deliver branded yet locally resonant architecture at scale, supporting one of the world’s most recognizable restaurant brands through thoughtful design, strategic coordination, and a deep understanding of place.
