TGS Engineers Office Building
Breathing new life into a historic structure.
Upland Architects is proud to have partnered with TGS Engineers on the architectural transformation of 201 W. Marion Street—an iconic 41,880 sq. ft. masonry and timber-framed building in the heart of uptown Shelby, North Carolina. Originally constructed in 1926, this three-story structure had served a wide range of past functions, including a DMV office and restaurant. Owned by TGS Engineers, it stands today reimagined as the new Shelby office for the engineering group, with additional ground-floor health clinic and retail opportunities that support the area’s growing momentum.
Our work began in early 2018 and concluded in March 2020, during which we provided a comprehensive scope of services including existing conditions surveying, programming, schematic and interior design, and the development of construction documents. We collaborated closely with McKnight Smith Ward Griffin for MEP and life safety engineering, and worked in partnership with TGS Engineers themselves for structural and civil engineering design—ensuring a cohesive, well-integrated approach across all disciplines.
This adaptive reuse effort not only celebrates the building’s history but showcases the value of revitalization—offering our client a fully modernized, efficient, and inspiring workplace for nearly half the cost of new construction. The project is a testament to the power of thoughtful reinvestment in local architecture and community growth.
