Located in the historic Batterymarch building in Downtown Boston, Tradesman is a thoughtfully curated all-day café, cocktail bar, and pizzeria that celebrates the spirit of craftsmanship—past and present. With a concept rooted in versatility, the design supports a seamless transition from bustling morning espresso bar to lively evening lounge, activating the space with intention from dawn to dusk.
With growing demands on restauranteurs to optimize space and profitability, Tradesman stands as a forward-thinking example of spatial flexibility and all-day usability. From power breakfasts and casual meetings to afternoon gatherings and evening cocktails, the environment fosters comfort, energy, and a sense of belonging.
A space designed for the people.
As the Architect of Record, Upland Architects partnered closely with interior designer Stephen Martyak of studiotyak to bring this unique, multifunctional concept to life. Upland played a key role in transforming the existing space—marked by its original brickwork, vaulted ceilings, and early 20th-century charm—into a modern hospitality venue that merges form and function with personality and purpose.
The design embraces a rich palette of warm burgundy tones, exposed brick, and antique details, while layering in contemporary elements like metallic copper wallpaper, leatherette seating, and state-of-the-art espresso equipment to reflect Tradesman’s balance of old-world elegance and new-world ambition. Each architectural and design decision pays tribute to the namesake: a blend of financial traders, global coffee commerce, and skilled artisans—united by grit, resourcefulness, and creativity.
