Urban Wild

Building a unique entertainment destination.

Urban Wild reimagines entertainment at the edge of Charlestown’s Hood Park with a bold, immersive venue that merges food, games, music, and design into one cohesive experience. As Architect of Record, Upland Architects partnered closely with interior designer Stephen Martyak of studioTYAK to bring this multifaceted destination to life—translating an ambitious creative vision into a fully realized, code-compliant, and operational space.

Drawing inspiration from the reclaimed underbellies of America’s urban overpasses, the design channels a gritty-meets-playful aesthetic that activates the industrial backdrop of the former I-93 elevated roadway. A sunken beer garden, framed by a shipping container back bar and surrounded by towering concrete structures, sets the tone for an atmosphere that’s both raw and inviting.

The venue seamlessly blends entertainment and hospitality. Inside, guests find 14 high-tech Brunswick bowling lanes, a live music stage, luxurious club-style seating, and flexible indoor-outdoor gaming spaces with bocce, shuffleboard, and croquet. Visitors enter through a whimsical, Alice-in-Wonderland-inspired tunnel and are welcomed into a vibrant space where Mario Kart plays on the main bar screen, espresso martinis are crafted with Tradesman’s signature coffee, and elevated bar fare.

To execute this complex program, Upland Architects led coordination across a strong team of consultants: MEP engineering by BLW Engineers, structural engineering by Camera/O’Neill Consulting Engineers, food service design by Next Step Design, and construction by general contractor Lee Kennedy Co., Inc. Together, the team delivered a layered and technically intricate project with a unified creative vision.

Upland Architects managed all aspects of the architectural delivery—from life safety and kitchen coordination to acoustics and integration with Hood Park’s base building infrastructure—ensuring every design element performed as beautifully as it looked. The result is a vibrant, all-in-one hospitality concept that offers guests a continuously engaging experience, both indoors and out.
